Royal Chhou Academy
All the performers or chhou artist come from poor families and belong to the Scheduled castes and tribes. Almost all of them are below the poverty line.
The troupe of artists from the Academy has performed in various Chhou programmes at the National as well as International level. Some of the countries it has visited are New Zealand,Australia, Thailand, Singapore and Russia. The Royal Chhou Academy has also won the Indira Gandhi Award for Tribal Culture.
Items performed:
The troupe will be performing 2 plays called 'Mahishasura Badh' and 'Ghorasura and Tasura Badh'. The first of these deals with the victory of Goddess Durga after she kills the demon king, Mahisasura, who had become invincible because the powers granted to him by Lord Brahma.
The second play looks at the defeat of the two asura brothers, Ghorasura and Tasura, who had also got tremendous power because of a boon granted by Lord Brahma. The play looks a how Devi Durga comes to the rescue, tricks the brothers through her clever disguise and
finally reveals herself, killing them in a powerful fight.
